Wedding Anniversary
The wedding anniversary is a chance for married couples to reaffirm their commitment, celebrate their relationship achievements and exchange gifts and tokens of appreciation and respect. Choosing how to celebrate an anniversary and what gift to purchase is a matter of research, planning and creativity.
The tradition of celebrating the date of a couple's marriage seems to have arrived in the Americas from Victorian England. In the early 1900s, the anniversary party grew in popularity and the modern tradition of marking the occasion came into being. By 1940, two lists of suggested anniversary gifts by year existed; one traditional, the other non-traditional. The original list included a lot of connection between the gift and the materials from which it was made, whereas the non-traditional list included a few more practical and convenient gifts in line with the growth of mass consumerism.
